Percussion and Electronics

Quintin Mallette is a dynamic percussionist dedicated to exploring new and underrepresented voices in percussion through performance, commissioning and research.

Quintin is currently a section percussionist with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and has performed with various orchestras and chamber groups across the southeast including the North Carolina Symphony, Carolina Philharmonic, Hilton Head Symphony, Savannah Philharmonic, and Verge Ensemble. As an educator, he has presented clinics at the Georgia Music Educators Association State Convention, NC Day of Percussion, Georgia College Day of Percussion, as well as various high schools and universities throughout Central and Eastern United States.

As a strong supporter of new music, he has recently commissioned several new solo and chamber works by rising composers. Additional performing interests include electroacoustic music with a special interest in the vibraphone as highlighted through commissioning projects with Von Hansen and Paul Lansky, and Alex Dowling.

Quintin joined the faculty of East Carolina University in the Fall of 2022. Previously, he served on the faculties of Fayetteville State University, Barton College, and the University of Mount Olive. He received his DMA and MM from the University of Georgia and his BM from Howard University. His Primary teachers include Mr. Timothy Adams Jr, Ms. Kimberly Toscano Adams, Mr. William (Bill) Richards II, Dr. Janis Potter, Dr. Jonathan Wacker, and Mr. Chris Nappi. Dr. Mallette is a proud endorser of Pearl/Adams instruments and Vic Firth sticks and mallets.

The Lyrical Saxophone

Michigan native Phil Barham‘s phenomenal playing has literally taken him around the globe. Concerts in London (Purcell Room), Oslo (Universitetets Aula), Geneva (Musee International de la Croix-Rouge and the Palais de l’Athenee), New York (Carnegie Recital Hall and Merkin Hall), Chicago (Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series at the Chicago Public Library Cultural Center), Tokyo (Sogetsu Hall) and in many other cities throughout the world have been hailed by critics: “A most impressive London debut…brilliant young American saxophonist…” — Winds, UK; “Superb” Le Nouvel Humaniste, Geneva; “…Playing both alto and soprano saxophones, Mr. Barham illustrated the artist’s sure, facile technique and his suave way with slow, gentle melodies…dashing fleetly through Pascal’s Sonatine and the final section of Creston’s Sonata and making his instrument sing sweetly during the elegy from Poulenc’s Sonata and during Debussy’s familiar La fille aux cheveux de lin.” — The New York Times; “bewitching range of tone and flawless passage-work…lulled the senses…engaging rubati…” — Musical Opinion, London. Phil Barham received the Bachelor of Music degree in woodwinds from the University of North Texas and the Master of Music degree in wind instruments/ saxophone from the University of Michigan. A former faculty member at Califomia State University, Northridge, and at Tennessee Technological University, he has also been the Saxophone Instructor for Western Michigan University’s Summer Seminar.

Following a musical upbringing in Russia and later in Great Britain, Anatoly Larkin settled in the United States in 2000. In Minnesota, he was a pianist with the new music ensemble Zeitgeist, premiering and commissioning works from contemporary American composers. In 2005, he joined the music technology company Zenph, where he created Re-Performances® of great pianists from their historical acoustic recordings. Gould, Tatum, Rachmaninoff and Peterson albums released on the Sony Masterworks label were met with critical acclaim. Anatoly currently resides in North Carolina with his family, where he works as a teacher,  performer, accompanist and a consultant for Steinway and MetaMusic.

The concert will feature 20th- and 21st -century music for saxophone and piano, along with fixed electronic music (tape music; acousmatic music).
