BEAM: Biography and Electro-Acoustic Music

We start the 25th season with electronic music and performances inspired by biographies. Biographies of the famous, the not-so-famous, unnamed people (but you can make a guess), and even non-humans. Fixed electronic music (tape music; acousmatic music) and performances by Rodney Waschka II. Music by Mara Helmuth, Christian WolffDick Higgins, Allen Strange, Rodney Waschka II, and others.

Lecture Recital

Joshua Brinkman, Saxophone

Dr. Joshua Brinkman is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) at North Carolina State University. He is an historian of technology and also performs as a jazz and blues musician on saxophone and clarinet. His areas of expertise include the history of technology, agriculture, energy, musical instruments, and jazz.  In his most recent book, American Farming Culture and the History of Technology, he traces the history of how farmers form identity through technology use.  He will perform and lecture on the saxophone as music technology from an STS perspective.

Andrea Cheeseman, Clarinet

Andrea Cheeseman is a clarinetist and advocate for new music.  A sought-after performer of electroacoustic music written for clarinet and bass clarinet, she has toured extensively and been a featured performer at festivals such as Electronic Music Midwest (EMM), the Third Practice Electroacoustic Music Festival, the Electroacoustic Barn Dance and has appeared at multiple SEAMUS (Society of Electroacoustic Music in the United States) conferences. Described as “a skilled performer with an ability to connect to the audience. And comfortable in her own skin, she has the uncanny ability to slide into the soundscape as if she were physically part of it,” Cheeseman has premiered pieces by today’s leading composers and released her debut album Somewherein September 2019 (Ravello). Dr. Cheeseman has served on the faculties of Appalachian State University (tenured full professor), Delta State University, Alma College, and Hillsdale College. Cheeseman earned her Doctorate at Michigan State University. When not teaching or performing, Cheeseman spends her time gardening, swimming, practicing ashtanga yoga and perfecting her kimchi recipe.

Dr. Cheeseman will perform Seven Views from Yokohama.

John Merchant

John Merchant began his career at Middle Ear Studios on South Beach, owned by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees. In 2004, he opened RedDoor Studios in Miami to produce new and established acts.

In 2006, John began his career as a Professor and Chair for the Recording Industry Department at Middle Tennessee State University, retiring in 2025 to serve as the Director of Focusrite Professional for the Americas.

Prof. Merchant will lecture on the lifecycle of a music technology product.
