Gustavo Matamoros On His Music and Art

Gustavo Matamoros is a Venezuelan composer, interdisciplinary artist, and educator living in Miami. 
Since their inception, Matamoros has been the artistic director of both the SFCA Subtropics Festival and the Interdisciplinary Sound Arts Workshop (iSaw). Matamoros’s catalog includes numerous pieces for solo electroacoustic media, electro-acoustics combined with traditional instruments, mixed media, installations, sound portraits, radiophony, text and video. He has also created many pieces for the uncommon instrument, the musical saw. Gustavo Matamoros’ music has been presented at numerous cultural events in the US, Latin America and Europe. He has collaborated with a long list of prominent artists such as Davey and Jan Williams, Fred Longberg-Holm, Dinorah Rodríguez, Helena Thevenot, Lou Mallozzi, Charles Recher, David Manson, Shahreyar Ataie, Jacqueline Humbert, Malcolm Goldstein, Russell Frehling, Alison Knowles, David Dunn and Rene Barge.

James Paul Sain On His Music

James Paul Sain is Professor of Music at the University of Florida where he teaches electroacoustic and acoustic music composition, theory, and technology. He founded and directed the internationally acclaimed Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival for 17 years. His compositional oeuvre spans all major acoustic ensembles, instrumental and vocal soloists, and embraces electroacoustic music. His works have been featured at major national and international societal events. He has presented his music in concert and given lectures in Asia, Europe, South America and North America. Dr. Sain is President Emeritus of the Society of Composers Inc. He previously served for several terms on American Composers Alliance Board of Governors. His music is available in print from Brazinmusikanta and American Composers Editions and on CD on the Capstone, Electronic Music Foundation, Innova, University of Lanús, Mark Masters, Centaur, New Ariel, Albany and NACUSA labels. Jeri-Mae G. Astolfi is a Canadian-born pianist whose playing has been lauded as “brilliant” (New Music Connoisseur), “persuasive” (Sequenza21), and “beautiful” (American Record Guide). Her repertoire, ranging from the Renaissance era through the present, clearly affirms her keen interest in new music, which has led her to commission and premiere many new solo and collaborative works—music that has been featured on live radio broadcasts and released by Albany Records, Innova Recordings, Ravello Records’ Capstone Collection, Ravello Records, as well as the Society of Composers Inc. Performers Recording Series. Mainly Piano has hailed, “Astolfi is the rare artist who seems as comfortable with traditional classics as she is with more experimental music. … [A]stonishing pianism … her recordings never fail to impress.” Her multimedia recording of Yehuda Yannay’s Fantasietta and Ten Hommages will be released in 2022.

Betty Wishart’s music has been performed throughout the United States, in England, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, South Korea, Russia and Japan. After graduating from Queens University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she continued her studies in New York City. Her major piano and composition teachers were Richard Bunger, Michael Zenge, Roger Hannay, Donald Waxman, and Wolfgang Rosé.
Prof. Wishart will discuss her music including works that will be performed that same evening by Jeri-Mae G. Astolfi.
