The Red Clay Saxophone Quartet was formed in 2003 when the fates conspired to bring four internationally recognized saxophonists (Susan Fancher, Robert Faub, Steven Stusek and Mark Engebretson) together in Greensboro, North Carolina. The RCSQ takes its name from the area’s luscious red soil. The Quartet presents a varied repertoire from classical to jazz to new music to tango, featuring music by composers such as Chen Yi, Ben Johnston, James Paul Sain, György Ligeti, Guillermo Lago, Francis Poulenc, Alejandro Rutty, Steve Reich, Mark Engebretson, David Maslanka, Martin Bresnick, Burton Beerman, and Gavin Bryars. This concert will feature works by Mark Engebretson, Chen Yi and James Paul Sain.

Composer and Clarinetist Gary Powell Nash is Professor of Music Theory and Technology at Fisk University and Conductor for the Fisk University Jazz Ensemble.
Gary Powell Nash has been very much influenced by his education, as well as his environment, to compose music that contributes to, and helps advance American music. His compositions range from chamber to orchestral works and are influenced by European music as well as traditional American genres such as jazz, blues, spirituals and ragtime. His objective is to find the most unique and exotic subject matter as a premise for a new creative work.
Gary Powell Nash’s music is bright, strongly rhythmic and shaped by his musical roots and traditions in the African-American community. He is able to abstract blues/gospel/jazz elements and infuse these morphs into a solid, crafted style based on Western classical disciplines with a keen understanding of instrumentation. Audiences are affected by the intense, dramatic power of his style and the intellect behind the music. Nash is wholeheartedly committed to the unifying power of music.

Dan Hurlin received a 1990 Village Voice OBIE award for his solo adaptation of Nathanael West’s A COOL MILLION, and his suite of puppet pieces EVERYDAY USES FOR SIGHT: Nos. 3 & 7 (2000) earned him a 2001 New York Dance and Performance award (a.k.a. “BESSIE”). His HIROSHIMA MAIDEN, (2004) was awarded a UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionette) citation of Excellence. Other works include DISFARMER (2009) which premiered at St. Ann’s Warehouse, the making of which was chronicled in filmmaker David Soll’s documentary, PUPPET. His most recent work DEMOLISHING EVERYTHING WITH AMAZING SPEED premiered at Bard’s Summerscape Festival in 2016. Prof. Hurlin taught at Bowdoin, Barnard and Bennington Colleges, Princeton University and until his retirement in 2020, he served as the Director of the Graduate Program in Theatre at Sarah Lawrence College.

Alan Dehmer is a fine art photographer and a founding member of the FRANK Gallery. For two decades Mr. Dehmer has focused on hand-made and alternative printing processes, including cyanotypes, wetplate, and albumin prints. He is a master gummist – an expert on gum bichromate photography, his passion. Previously he worked as a photojournalist in Washington, DC, Europe, north Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa for publications including Africa Report, the Christian Science Monitor, and Time Magazine. For 25 years he served as the photographer for Manbites Dog Theater Company in Durham. He is author of Place, Impermanence, Memory: Gum Bichromate Photography (2011).

Rob Voisey

Rob Voisey composes electro-acoustic and chamber music. His aesthetic oscillates from the Romantic to the Post Modern Mash-Up. His work has been performed in venues throughout the world including Carnegie Hall, the World Financial Center Winter Garden Atrium, and Stratford Circus in London. Voisey has been profiled and his music broadcast on HEC-TV public television in St Louis, Elektramusik in France, as well as radio stations all around the world including Cityscape – NPR St. Louis Public Radio; Arts & Answers & Art Waves on WKCR, Upbeat with Eva Radich on Radio New Zealand; and Kol Yisrael, Israeli Radio.
Kathryn Brown received her Doctorate of Musical Arts in clarinet performance at the University of South Carolina; she holds a Master of Music from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Music from East Carolina University. Dr. Brown has over fifteen years of entrepreneurial experience as a freelance musician and private music teacher, performing with numerous professional orchestras across the southeast and teaching clarinet and piano lessons to young children, teens, and adults. Dr. Brown is Lecturer in Entrepreneurial Studies in the Arts at NC State.
Rob Voisey has curated a program of electronic works that premiered in the Chicago area and which is being presented around the country. The program includes works by Voisey, Margaret Schedel, Jason Bolte, Dennis Bathory-Kitsz, and others. Dr. Brown will give a special preview performance of a new work for clarinet and tape.
